Social Media Bill Interferes With Right Of Nigerians, SERAP Tells Northern Govs, NASS

The Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has advised the National Assembly not to pass any social media bill, arguing that it will suppress freedom of expression.

It also frowned on the Northern Governors Forum for calling for the regulation of social media.

It hinted that it would institute legal actions if the social media bill scaled through.

“BREAKING: We’ll sue the Northern Governors’ Forum and @nassnigeria if any Social Media bill is passed and signed by President Buhari.

“Nigerians have a right to freedom of expression online. We won’t accept any illegal attempts to interfere with that right #NoToSocialMediaBill,” it tweeted.

THE WHISTLER earlier reported that the northern governors had in a meeting on Monday backed police reforms.

The forum also frowned on the uncontrolled use of social media which it says may threaten the nation.

But SERAP objected them, stressing that the governors’ position “is unconstitutional and antithetical to Nigeria’s international human rights obligations.”
