President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has been taken to Singapore for “routine medical check-up”, state media says.

The 93-year-old who reportedly fell ill late last week, is expected back in Zimbabwe midweek.

“President Mugabe on Friday left the country for Singapore for a routine medical check-up,” Africa Review quoted local media.

This makes it the second time in two months the controversial leader has been flown abroad for treatment.

He was taken to Singapore in May, also for “routine medical check-up”, following a report his health was “in bad shape”.

President Mugabe now walks with difficulty and sometimes dozes off during meetings.

His health has been the subject of increased speculation in recent years. In 2011 and 2014 he had eye surgery in a hospital in Singapore.

Despite President Mugabe’s advanced age, his ruling Zanu-PF party last year endorsed him as its candidate for the 2018 General Election.

Mugabe has been President of Zimbabwe since 1987.

He previously led Zimbabwe as Prime Minister from 1980 to 1987.
