Two Killed In Awka Gunmen Attacks

Two people were killed in separate attacks by gunmen in Awka, the Anambra State capital, on Sunday.

Police said three unidentified men travelling in a silver Toyota Corolla shot one victim along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, before attacking another person on S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo.

The Anambra State Police Command, in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, said operatives had launched a manhunt for the attackers.

“Upon receipt of the distress information, Command operatives immediately mobilised patrol teams to the affected areas and commenced efforts to track down the assailants,” the statement said.

The victims were taken from the two locations to a hospital, where they were confirmed dead.

One of the victims had yet to be identified as of Monday. The second was identified as Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Azia.”

Police said operatives recovered N7,550, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the crime scenes.

The Commissioner of Police directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further investigation.

The command appealed to residents and anyone who witnessed the attacks or had information about the suspects or the vehicle used to contact the police, assuring that information provided would be treated with “utmost confidentiality.”
