U.S. Democratic Nomination: Gay Presidential Aspirant Leads In Iowa

Pete Buttigieg (38), who is married to a man (Chasten Buttigieg), is slightly leading the Iowa Democratic Party caucuses ahead of the primary voting on February 11 which will determine the candidate that would challenge U.S. President Donald Trump at the general elections in November.

Buttigieg, who scored 26.2% (with 1% lead over Bernie Sanders), served in the U.S. military and was also a two-term mayor of South Bend, Indiana, U.S.

The Iowa Democratic Party (IDP) is the affiliate of the United States Democratic Party in the state of Iowa, responsible for organizing the Democratic Iowa Caucuses in presidential elections.

However, voters and other democratic contenders have criticized the Iowa process as there was a three-day delay in the announcement of votes, which the party said was due to “a reporting issue”.

BBC reports that Pete is also the first openly gay major-party presidential candidate, a historic candidacy that would have seemed inconceivable just a few decades ago.

According to him, he was shocked to see himself soar politically despite being gay.

“And as that reality became inescapable that it might cost me the chance to serve in uniform or in office; and here I am finding that that very same fact that might prevent me from having an impact in the world; at least a certain kind of impact in a certain kind of way, it’s exactly the impact I’m having now.

“I’m not running to be the gay president of the United States, I’m running to be the president for everybody,” Pete said to CNN.

The democratic aspirant also said that America has a place for the gay community

“But the fact that I am standing here and my husband is watching right now is just an amazing example of that believe that this country has place for you,” he added.

But Trump had mocked the aspirant at one of his rallies at Charlotte, N.C.

‘It turned out to be Pete Buttigieg. Whoever the hell that is? Mayor Pete.

‘Somebody explain that one to me. Have you ever seen anything so crazy?’’
