Use Your Voters’ Cards To Remedy Your Political Frustration, Ndigbo Charged

Nigerians from the Southeast have been urged to obtain their voters’ cards in order to have the chance of remedying their ugly political situation in the country.

Dr Desna Ajah, head of Department of Humanities, Coal City University, Enugu, stated this, Friday, during a programme in Enugu. He attributed the political frustration of the Igbo at the national level to political apathy.

Dr Ajah said, “Politics is a game of number. The voting strength of the Igbo is weakened because of our political apathy. We don’t have the voting number proportionate to our population. We are found everywhere, yet we don’t command voting relevance.

“There should be adequate interest to defeat political apathy for Ndigbo to regain their rightful political position in the country. In the north, academics, political leaders, traders, car washers, herders, farmers, name them, struggle to vote. They have their voters’ cards to determine who governs them. In our case, the opinion is that votes don’t count. If votes don’t count, why do politicians campaign?”

THE WHISTLER reports that there has been intensified voter registration in Enugu State. Mrs Oyibo Ikpa told our correspondent that, “I got registered last week. My major reason is to vote during the next election. I never voted before. But I think time has come when votes would count.”

An okada rider, Levi Ekebe, however, said, “I obtained my voters’ card for identification. Nowadays, banks demand voters’ cards, passports and drivers’ licences for identification. I don’t think I will vote because votes don’t count.

“Again, our leaders don’t bother about the poor. They focus on empowering themselves. My voter’s card is my ID, and not to vote for anybody.”
