Anambra Building Materials Market Gutted By Fire

Fire has gutted the building material market located at Ogidi, Idemili Local Government Area of Anambra State.

THE WHISTLER gathered that the fire started at about 04.04hrs on Wednesday.

The chief fire officer of the state, Martin Agbili, while confirming the incident, said firefighters and fire trucks at Onitsha and Awka were deployed to the fire scene.

He added that the fire emanated from a lorry loaded with calcium carbide and other goods, parked inside the market. The carbide reportedly generated heat which led to an explosion.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Anambra State Command, confirmed the fire outbreak. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Edwin Okadigbo. told our correspondent that the command “ received a distress call of a fire outbreak at the building material market, Ogidi, and thereafter alerted the state Fire Service led by Engr. Martins Agbili who responded promptly by deploying  firefighters and fire trucks from Onitsha and Awka to the scene.

“Men of the Idemili North Divisional office of the NSCDC, led by the Divisional Officer CSC Onwuakagba Stella, were also mobilised to the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that there was no loss of lives, but goods worth millions of naira were destroyed.”

Okadigbo added that the state commandant of the corps, Comdt. David Bille, has ordered a discrete investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
