Reacting on Monday morning, President Buhari’s wife expressed sadness at the news and prayed for the quick recovery of the former vice president’s son.

“Your Excellency, It’s with deep sense of concern that i extend my sincere prayers towards the quick recovery of your dear son. Allah renu en Amin,” the first lady tweeted.

Prior to Nigeria’s confirmation of its index case of COVID-19, Atiku, who was President Buhari’s main challenger in the 2019 presidential election, had called on the president to suspend all international flights coming to Nigeria from high-risk countries to enable the country control the spread of the virus.

After the country recorded it’s third case, the former vice president restated the call:  “This is a patriotic call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take every reasonable step to protect the citizens of Nigeria, by temporarily suspending flights to and from such countries, until we build up our ability to contain the corona virus. Our borders should however be open to Nigerian citizens, regardless of their status.”

The federal government had suspended flights from 13 countries hours before Nigeria confirmed 8 cases of the virus.

The government subsequently banned all international flights coming into Nigeria after the country’s confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 22.

Presently, Nigeria has at least thirty confirmed cases of Coronavirus, out of which two had recovered and had been discharged.
