Arsonists Burn INEC Office In Enugu

The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, was early Sunday morning burnt by unknown arsonists.

THE WHISTLER gathered the fire caused huge damage in one of the offices.

The state chief fire officer, Engr Okwudiri Ohaa, confirmed the incident to newsmen.

He said, “A distress call was received by the Enugu State Fire Service at about 1.30am.

“As usual, when we received the distress call, our trucks and men at Ozalla station quickly moved to the scene.

“We equally mobilised fire engines and fire fighters from Enugu metropolis.

“Our prompt intervention saved the entire complex as only one office room was affected in the raging fire before it was extinguished.”

The police public relations officer, Enugu State Police Command, Mr Daniel Ndukwe, said, “The state CID Enugu has commenced investigations to unravel the mystery behind the fire incident that occured at INEC Office in Awgu LGA, in the early hours of today, 19th September, 2021.”

Our correspondent reports that some months ago, INEC offices in Udenu LGA and the Independence Layout in the state were burnt by unknown persons.

An analyst, Kanayo Eze, said, “It means it is not yet uhuru in Southeast. We are getting ready to overcome the sit-at-home orders on Mondays that have crippled business activities in the zone.

“Just yesterday, police operatives were killed in Anambra State. A lawyer was killed in Owerri some days ago. The hoodlums are back again. Our security operatives must rise to this occasion.”
