Bandits Kidnapped 400 People Across Nigeria In 30 Days

In the last 30 days, kidnappers have abducted no fewer than 400 persons across the country, while also displacing people from their homes, and causing many to grieve over the loss of their loved ones.

THE WHISTLER compiled reported cases of abductions from May 30 – June 29, 2021. Below is the timeline of the abductions.

May 30: At least 136 students were abducted from an Islamic learning facility in Tegina, Rafi Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger state

June 27: Gunmen abducted a man and shot his wife dead in Offa Local Government Area (LGA) of Kwara State.

June 27: Gunmen abducted the Eleda of Eda Ile, Oba Benjamin Oso, in Ekiti East LGA of Ekiti State.

June 23: Bandits abducted no fewer than 7 persons from a Hilltop hotel at Tunga Maje in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The owner was among the victims.

June 23: Bandits abducted 33 persons in Kachi LGA of Kaduna State, killed one.

June 22: Bandits abducted a village head and his wife at the Bakatari area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

June 18: Bandits abducted 4 Chinese workers handling the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge railway project and killed a policeman.

June 17: Armed group had abducted no fewer than 80 students and five teachers from the Federal Government College (FGC), in Kebbi, Birnin-Kebbi.

June 16, Gunmen invaded the home of a farmer in Ajowa Akoko, Akoko North-west LGA of Ondo State. Two of his two children were reportedly killed. Two other persons were also abducted.

June 16, Gunmen abducted two Chinese and killed one at a mining site at Arufu community in Wukari LGA of Taraba State.

June 16: Gunmen abducted Rivers United Manager, Stanley Eguma and two others along Enugu road on their way back from a Nigerian professional Football League game against Adamawa United, in Yola.

June 14: Twelve persons were abducted after gunmen invaded the Kofar Gayan/Kofar Kona area of Zaria in Kaduna State, eight of which were family members.

June 12: Suspected herdsmen killed one and kidnapped six in Nkanu East LGA of Enugu State.

June 11: Armed men allegedly kidnapped a farmer in Ikole Ekiti, Ekiti State, and his captors demanded N30 million for his release. He was, however, released three days later.

June 10: 15 passengers were reportedly abducted by suspected herdsmen on the Aboh-Umulolo Road in the Okigwe LGA.

June 10: kidnappers abducted eight students and two lecturers from the Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria, Kaduna State.

June 10: On the same day, kidnappers reportedly opened fire on a car along the Ibadan-Ijebu Ode Highway. NO fewer than four occupants of the vehicle were whisked away.

June 9: bandits attacked three villages in Maru LGA of Zamfara, abducting no fewer than 60 women and burning huts and buildings.

June 9: Armed men abducted a lecturer of the University of Jos in Plateau State, Dan Ella, and demanded N10m as ransom for his release.

June 6: Kidnappers abducted one Mary Adi in the Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and demanded N10 million ransom.

June 4: Two persons were reportedly kidnapped after suspected pirates waylaid a passenger boat in Ke community of Degema LGA in Rivers.

June 4: Bandits abducted 11 persons in Wanzamai Village, along Gusau – Zaria Road in Tsafe LGA of Zamfara State, but the police confirmed their release two days after.

June 3: Armed men hijacked a school bus, kidnapping a female staff member. She was later released.

A report published in May by SB Morgen (SBM) Intelligence said between 2011 and 2020, Nigerians paid at least $18.34 million (₦7 billion) as ransom to kidnappers.

Across the six geopolitical zones, armed bandits kill and kidnap at will despite the efforts of the security agencies.
