BBC Slams Buhari, ‘You Lack Faith In Nigeria’s Health System’

The British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC has lampooned President Muhammadu Buhari over his lengthened medical trip in the United Kingdom, UK.

The president, who has been away from the country for over 95 day, was included in the category of five African presidents who have “an apparent lack of faith in the health systems at home”.

Other president named in the list include Presidents Abdelaziz Bouteflika (Algeria), Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe), Jose Eduardo dos Santos (Angola) and Patrice Talon (Benin).

According to the report, Buhari is the “first among equals” in terms of time spent abroad getting medical help.

In the report, BBC quoted Naziru Mikailu, its Abuja editor, as saying the public health system in Nigeria is terrible because of poor funding.

“The Nigerian president has spent more than four months in London this year getting treatment for an undisclosed illness, causing considerable disquiet at home.

“Unlike one of his predecessors, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua who went to Saudi Arabia to see a doctor, Mr Buhari did leave his deputy in charge, but this has not dampened the criticism,” the report read.

Recall that Buhari recently hosted his media team during the weekend.

Speaking with the team, the president expressed his desire to return home. “I feel I could go home, but the doctors are in charge. I’ve now learnt to obey orders, rather than be obeyed,” Femi Adesina, Buhari’s spokesman, quoted him as saying.

“I’ve learnt to obey my doctor’s orders, rather than be the one issuing the orders. Here, the doctor is absolutely in charge.”
