BREAKING: Buhari Declares June 12 Democracy Day

- Awards MKO Abiola Posthumous GCFR

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, conferred a posthumous GCFR on late Chief Moshood Abiola.

President Buhari has equally declared June 12 a Democracy Day in honor of Abiola’s victory at the 1993 presidential election.

Buhari made the announcement in a memo personally signed by him on Wednesday.

According to the memo, June 12 will now replace May 29 as national public holiday in celebration of Nigeria Democracy Day

Abiola’s running mate Ambassador Babagana Kingibe was awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), while late Chief Gani Fawehinmi SAN was also awarded posthumously a GCON.

The award ceremony will take place next Tuesday, June 12, 2018.

“Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day.

“We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to the late Chief MKO Abiola,” said President Buhari in a statement by the Presidency.
