BREAKING: INEC Declares Run-off In Osun Guber

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the Osun State gubernatorial election that held on Saturday, September 22, 2018, as inconclusive.

The reason for the declaration is the number cancelled votes is higher than the margin between the top two candidates.

Based on the results collated from 29 INEC local government secretariats as well as the INEC, Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party won majority votes with 254,698 while his closest rival Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress came second with 254,345 votes.

The total number of voided votes was 3499, while the difference between both leading candidates was 353.

According to electoral rules, a re-run election can be so declared if the margin of victory in an election is lower than cancelled votes, such as in Osun where thousands of votes were cancelled in various local governments while the vote difference between the leading candidates was less than a thousand. In that case, rerun will be held in only affected areas where elections were cancelled.

The INEC chief returning officer said the commission will later today announce a new date for the rerun election, to determine the eventual winner of the election.
