Ume was commended for his numerous philanthropic and social welfare gestures, especially his support toward the media industry during the six-month long lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was named as “HERO of NUJ FCT Covid-19 Palliative” by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council, after he donated over 100 bags of rice and 300 cartons of noodles as palliatives to journalists in the federal capital.
