China Launches 5G Services In Race To Narrow Tech Gap With US

The three major state telecom operators in China have launched 5G wireless technology, as the country races to narrow its technology gap with the US amid a bruising trade war.

The country’s largest carrier, China Mobile, announced its 5G services were available in 50 cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. It said the packages will start from 128 yuan (N6534) a month.

The market challengers, China Telecom and China Unicom, are also offering services at slight price difference in major cities based on report from their websites.

The 5G is an ultra-fast mobile internet service which is 100 times faster than existing 4G networks, and  allows consumers download full-length films within seconds, or use apps with virtual reality.

Tech companies have said that the technology will pave the way for driverless cars, advance automation in factories, and allow users to remotely control appliances such as coffee makers and ovens via the internet.

According to estimates by China Telecom, the country is expected to be in forefront in the adoption of 5G services with over 170 million 5G subscribers by next year.
