Coronavirus: Global Airline Patronage Drops By 80% – Data Firm

Globally, bookings at numerous airlines have dropped to a record 80 percent while many passenger airplanes are currently in storage, data shows.

This may not be unconnected with the travel restrictions imposed by various governments of nations as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Olivier Ponti, Vice president of Forward Keys data firm, issued a statement, adding that airlines may find it hard to recover after the Coronavirus pandemic was over.

“It is likely that when we get across to the other side of the pandemic, things won’t return to the vibrant market conditions we had at the start of the year.

“It’s also possible that a number of airlines will have gone bust and uneconomic discounts will be necessary to attract demand back,” he said.

The travel analytics company also said that the number of international airline seats had dropped to 10 million between March 30 to April 5, lower than 44.2 million, last year.

The Asia-Pacific Vice president at the International Air Transport Association, Conrad Clifford, had also said that governments may have to provide stimulus to airlines to get them fully operational.

“Governments need to ensure that airlines have sufficient cash flow to tide them over this period,” he said.
