Corruption In Nigeria: Dino Melaye Accuses Lawyers Of Compromising Justice

Controversial former Kogi Senator, Dino Melaye, has accused some Nigerian lawyers of compromising justice in the country thereby sustaining the trend of corruption and impunity in the society.

The event was in commemoration of the World Anti-Corruption Day.

Melaye said he had been in situations where he was advised to engage lawyers who would gain favor before a specific judge.

“Lawyers don’t help, do you know that once you have a case people will advise you – my brother, if you want to win this case go and meet so so lawyer, he has contacts. That contact means he knows judges…what kind of corruption… it is extremely painful,” he said.

He further stated that lawyers should be change agents in the society because their role is critical in nation building.

Meanwhile, he argued that disunity, sectionalism, and tribalism are threatening to tear the country apart.

“The battle to salvage this country is a battle of no retreat no surrender,” he added.

On his part, Chief Mike Ozhekome SAN called on government and institutions to obey the rule of law in all its actions.

“The present government is very short in tolerance of opposition, vicious in disrespect of citizen’s right, brazenly disregarding rule of law and court orders but lengthy and comfortable in sheer propaganda, intolerance, cluelessness and directionless…God save Nigeria, “he stated during his address.

In another development, the United Nations (UN) warned all countries to be wary of corruption at all levels, saying that “Corruption drains resources from people who need them, undermines trust in institutions, exacerbates the vast inequalities exposed by the virus and hinders a strong recovery.”
