Recall that Kanu is facing treason and terrorism charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since his extradition to the country.

His application for transfer to the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Kuje, was rejected by the court due to security concerns.

While the trial is ongoing, Kanu’s lawyer approached the trial court in Abia, seeking among other things, his unconditional release from detention.

That will now be heard on the next adjourned date.

South East leaders have urged the federal government to consider a political solution to the IPOB challenge.

The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation had however assured that Kanu would be given fair trial.
