COVID-19: Botswana Coordinator Contracts Virus As Deputy Withdraws Resignation

Botswana Government says its Covid-19 Task Team Coordinator, Kereng Masupu has contracted the virus while adding that deputy coordinator, Prof. Mosepele Mosepele has rescinded his recent decision to resign from the team.

“The office of the President wishes to inform the public that the Deputy Coordinator of the Presidential Covid-19 Task Team, Professor Mosepele Mosepele has rescinded his resignation,” Press Secretary to the President, Batihalefi Lesgajang, disclosed in a statement on Saturday.

Recall that the Botswana President had rejected the deputy coordinator’s resignation on Friday, stressing that he would meet with him.

Our correspondent gathered from Twitter reactions that Mosepele had resigned over undisclosed reasons, with speculation that he had scores to settle with some government officials, regarding the management of the pandemic.

But Government said he made a u-turn following ” his meeting with His Excellency, Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi today.”

Based on the development, the government announced that Prof. Mosepele Mosepele, would be the acting coordinator for now.

“His Excellency has in the meantime been informed that the Coordinator of the Covid-19 Task Team, Dr. Kereng Masupu and the Covid-19 Scientific Advisor ,Dr Mogomotsi Marshaba have tested positive to Covid-19.

“Therefore, during the time of Dr. Masupu’s absence, Professor Mosepele will act as the Coordinator,” the statement partly read.

The government reiterated its commitment to the covid-19 fight.

The statement further reads:

“The nation is advised to abide by all the health precautions and take care of the elderly, children and vulnerable groups during this difficult period.”
