COVID-19: WHO DG Welcomes Pope’s Push For A Cure

The Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom, has appreciated Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis, for backing the search for a Covid-19 vaccine.

Adhanom tweeted about this on Thursday.

In his tweet on Wednesday, the Pope had stressed that a cure was needed to defeat the pandemic.

He also called for equality in the distribution of solutions and strategies that could get each country out of the pandemic.

“The response to the pandemic is dual: we need to find a cure for this small which has brought the whole world to its knees and we must cure a larger virus, that of social injustice,” Pope had tweeted.

Adhanom stated that Pope’s position was a boost for WHO’s position regarding the pandemic.

He stressed that when a medical cure was out, it should be efficiently circulated to countries who needed it most.

“I couldn’t agree more with Your Holiness @Pontifex.

“The #COVID19 pandemic shows that we must make health a human right for all and not allow it to be a privilege for the few.

” It also gives us an opportunity to rebuild a better, safer, fairer world – together!,” he tweeted.

Recall that many countries had enrolled for Covid-19 vaccine trials.

China and the United States are already in the final stages of the trials.

Russia says its vaccine is ready but it is yet to be endorsed by WHO.

Meanwhile, WHO had urged countries to keep complying with the public health advisory on Covid-19, as a preventative measure.
