NBA Bows To Pressure, Drops El-Rufai From List Of Speakers At Conference

Following widespread criticisms, the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) has removed the name of Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as one of the speakers at its 2020 Annual General Conference.

The NBA tweeted this on Thursday, but it did not state why it took the decision.

“The National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association at its ongoing meeting resolves that the invitation to the Kaduna State Governor, H.E. Nasir El-Rufai by the 2020 Annual General Conference Planning committee be withdrawn and decision communicated to the Governor,” it tweeted.

Recall that numerous people, including lawyers, signed a petition to stop El-Rufai from speaking at the NBA conference.

The petition, started by one Usani Odum on change.org, frowned on the NBA’s decision to allow El-Rufai to address the conference.

The petition partly reads: “The senseless killings in southern Kaduna must stop.

“The political correctness of Governor El-Rufai on national TV is diversionary.

” It is a reversal to have him speak to lawyers on security, when Governor (Babagana) Zulum of Borno a better person can do so.”

THE WHISTLER gathered that certain lawyers threatened boycotting the conference if it went ahead to feature El-Rufai as one the speakers.
