As Nigerians continue to groan under adverse economic condition, the Christian Care for Widows, Widowers, Aged and Orphans (CCWA), has raised the alarm that widows, orphans are amongst those worst affected.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja on events lined up in commemoration of the International Day for Widows and the 24th convention of the CCWA, founder and president of the group, Prof. Deborah Ajakaiye, said the economic situation of the country has reduced their capacity to empower more widows, orphans and the aged, adding that the insurgency in the north east has increased the number of widows and orphans.

“Our research has shown that widows, orphans and the aged are the worst hit as the economy continues to nose-dive. People no longer are extending help to these very vulnerable members of society and it is worrying.

People now tend to look towards only the immediate members of their families, therefore widows, orphans and the likes are left unattended to.

“The situation is very challenging as it is eroding the human milk of kindness and emasculating those who were already economically challenged. For instance, last year we were able to give out scholarship to 600, but this year it has dropped to about 400.

“What this means is that the government must be quick with its social intervention schemes, while Nigerians can ill afford to lose their humanity by not looking towards these ones.”

Ajakaiye said this year’s programme is with the theme: “Count Your Blessings,” stressing that despite the very difficult times, it was important that people should count their blessings and look forward with hope.

Activities lined up for the 3-day event include free medical outreach for the elderly, widows, widowers and orphans as well as free vocational training and a peace march.
