EFCC Arrests 59-Year-Old Man Selling Naira Notes

Operatives of the Uyo Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested one Simon B. Idio, a 59-year old man, who allegedly sells new naira notes.

According to EFCC, the suspect was arrested on Friday at the Ibom Tropicana Mall along Udo Udoma way in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The commission noted that his arrest came after it gathered intelligence and surveillance regarding his illegal cash dealings in local and foreign currencies within the state

The EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, said: “He was caught selling N700, 000.00 (Seven hundred thousand naira) new naira notes in two denominations: twelve (12) bundles of N500 notes totaling six hundred thousand naira N600, 000.00 (six hundred thousand naira) and a bundle of N1000 notes N100,000.00 (one hundred naira)

“Idio confessed to the crime and would be charged to court soon.”

THE WHISTLER reported that the anti-graft agency had launched a special task force to enforce laws prohibiting currency defacement, racketeering and dollarisation of the Nigerian economy.

The task force, inaugurated last week by EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, aims to protect the economy from instability caused by illegal practices like invoice issuance in foreign currency and naira mutilation.
