Enugu Shut Despite Cancellation Of Sit-At-Home Order

Despite the cancellation of the sit-at-home order in the entire Southeast states by the Indigenous People of Biafra, business activities in Enugu State remained grounded today.

A research carried out by our correspondent across the state capital showed that banks, filling stations, and schools were shut.

Traders and civil servants were also not spared as a majority of them did not report to their duty posts.

At Ogbete main market, shops were all shut. A few traders were seen standing and asking whoever they saw what they wanted to buy.

A trader, who refused to say his name, said, “We are selling behind closed doors. We have keys to our shops. So if we strike a deal, we open the shop and sell. The problem is that buyers are not forthcoming.”

At the ever-busy state secretariat, civil servants were seen in trickles. Those interviewed said they did not enter their offices.

Only one filling station opened along New Market-9th Mile road. Their metre could not be read as the seller claimed it had spoilt. He however said, “We sell at N185 per litre.”

No banks were seen operating across the state metropolis.

Some commercial drivers interviewed said, “Some of us are working. But there are no passengers. So, I’m returning home.”

Police checkpoints checked by our correspondent were however unmanned. Security operatives were also not seen moving around.

Unconfirmed reports said there were gunshots at Kenyatta market, but no casualties were recorded.

“The perpetrators simply wanted to scare people,” an eye witness said.
