Father Explains Why He Teaches His Kids How To Repair Motorcycles

A motorcycle repairer, Igwe bu Ike, from Orba in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Monday, said he was coaching his two sons how to repair motorcycles as kids so that they would be focused in life.

According to him, “I have gone around this country in search of livelihood. At the end of the day, I returned home empty handed. I then learnt how to repair motorcycles.

“I built a house from the proceeds. My shop is located in my house, so I pay no rents. I train my kids as well. They will be well educated, but I want them to be able to sustain themselves under any circumstances.

“I regret that Igbo boys don’t have patience to learn trades anymore. They only want to get rich. It is not possible. That is why crimes are everywhere.”

The two sons, Chidalu, 7, and Akachukwu, 9, told THE WHISTLER that they would like to be university graduates, but would be practising the trade in the process.

According to Akachukwu, “My father has taught me everything. I only need to get more strengthen to be able to loosen the engine. But I already know the parts and how to repair everything. I want to go to UNN. When I graduate, I will open my own shop.”

His brother, Chidalu, said, “I want to be a lawyer or an engineer. But I will still be repairing motorcycles. Maybe I will combine the two jobs. I am still in primary school. I’ll be doing this while schooling.

“I’ll be getting money to train myself. My father didn’t force me to learn. I was helping him, but in the process, I come to like the job.”
