Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has assured Nigerians that the current epileptic power supply in the country will soon be a thing of the past.
The Vice President disclosed this during the launch of the Presidential Initiative on Solar Homes Systems at Wuna village, Gwagwalada, on Tuesday.
Osinbajo explained that many Nigerian homes which lack electricity supply be moved away from the national grid to solar.
The initiative which supports the deployment of 20,000 Small Scale household Solar systems to rural communities in Nigeria, will be funded and implemented by the Niger Delta Power Holdings Plc (NDPHC) in partnership with Azuri Technologies.
Osinbajo explained that the device, which can power “4 light bulbs, 1 radio, 1 torchlight & has USB ports” will address the power needs of the people living in the rural communities.
He said: “There is absolutely no reason why our country that has possibly the best radiation anywhere in the world (should not embrace solar) – many parts of Nigeria, especially in the northern parts, radiation is excellent, and so we are going to do our best to use solar power to the maximum, especially wherever we can find the best radiation.
“We expect that this will be replicated all over Nigeria. We are starting with 20,000 but I am sure we will ramp up very quickly. We have been talking to the private sector about involving themselves also on this project.”
