Flood Kills Two Teenagers In Kaduna

Two teenagers have drowned following heavy rainfall that triggered flooding in parts of Kaduna State.

The victims, identified as 19-year-old Suleiman Yakubu and 17-year-old Abubakar Mohammed, reportedly drowned in a river in Askplaye community.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), North-West Operations Office in Kaduna, confirmed the incident, saying the bodies had yet to be recovered as of Monday.

The deaths occurred as emergency agencies intensified assessments of communities affected by days of torrential rainfall across parts of Kaduna metropolis.

NEMA said its assessment team, led by the Head of Operations, Hajia Halima Suleiman, visited affected communities to determine the extent of the flooding and identify urgent needs.

The agency said the downpour, which lasted for about four consecutive days from Thursday to Monday, caused flash floods in some locations.

According to NEMA, floodwaters submerged roads in affected communities and temporarily trapped some residents inside their homes.

The flooding also disrupted movement, forcing residents to exercise caution while navigating affected areas.

During the assessment, Suleiman visited Yakubu’s bereaved family to express the agency’s condolences and offer support following the teenager’s death.

NEMA said it was working with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and other relevant stakeholders to monitor developments and assess the impact of the flooding.

The agency added that continued assessments would guide emergency response efforts and help determine the assistance required by affected communities.
