“This court does not find any mitigating circumstance. Sengar was a public servant and betrayed people’s faith,” the court said.

The lawmaker was a member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The court also mandated Sengar, 51, to pay 27,000 pounds as compensation.

The case drew public attention when the victim attempted to commit suicide; she alleged that the police was trying to ignore the issue.

BBC reports that the woman, who can’t be named under Indian law alleged that she had approached Sengar for a job in June 2017 but was kidnapped and raped for more than a week by him and others.

The court had found Sengar guilty on Monday in line with India’s Penal Code for offence by public servants committing sexual assaults against minors.
