Ghana President Urges Support For Mali As He Hosts Buhari, Others

The President of Ghana and Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has charged his counterparts including President Muhammadu Buhari on the need to join forces to bring peace and stability back to Mali.

On Sunday, Buhari arrived Accra, Ghana to honor an Extraordinary Session of ECOWAS Leaders on the developments in Mali, where soldiers on two occasions overthrew the political leadership.

“I urge your excellencies to remain resolute in supporting the people of Mali to find a peaceful solution and restore democracy and stability in the country.

“I reiterate, on behalf of ECOWAS, our continued commitment to the peaceful transition in Mali with the basic goal of restoring democratic government and stability in Mali and in our region,” Akufo-Addo said during the meeting as quoted by AFP.

THE WHISTLER reported that the Malian military led by Colonel Assimi Goita had on Tuesday recaptured power in Mali following its detention and subsequent release of the president, prime minister and defence minister of the transitional government, President Bah Ndaw, Prime Minister Moctar Ouane and Souleymane Doucoure, respectively.

Recall that Goita is the country’s interim vice president, and was part of the mutinying soldiers that engaged in a coup in August 2020 thereby removing the country’s Prime Minister, Boubou Cisse, and the President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, from office.

Goita is reportedly part of the ECOWAS meeting in Accra.

“During his stay, the Head of State will have one-on-one with his Ghanaian counterpart and bilateral talks with Mali’s partners and friends.

“This move takes place after the publication of the Constitutional Court judgement which sets it up in its new functions,” his spokesperson stated on Facebook.
