Heat Wave: Abia Govt Urges Residents To Take NIMET Recommendations Serious

The Abia State Government has warned that the recent changes in weather resulting in heat waves during the day and night can have negative consequences such as dehydration, which can cause fainting, heat rashes, and psychological stress.

A press statement signed by Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, Abia State Commissioner for Environment, said the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had advised Nigerians on how to prepare for changes in climatic conditions.

He advised residents of Abia State to heed the recommendations of NIMET in order to reduce the risks associated with the heat wave.

The commissioner also stated that consuming less alcohol and caffeine, eating fewer foods high in protein, which raises metabolic activity, and drinking more water and staying hydrated are among the recommendations.

He advised that fresh foods and fruits are better alternatives.

The commissioner’s advisory follows recent reports on widespread chicken pox and heat rashes recorded by children and adults, which are associated with the current hot conditions.

According to the forecast released yesterday, the NIMET advisory recommended citizens stay inside between 12 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., take  cold bath before bed and constantly check their blood pressure.

In addition to the recommendations, Dr. Chimezie Okwuonu, a consultant nephrologist in the state,  stated that the elderly and pregnant are the groups most impacted by the heat wave.
