How Amotekun Can Be Effective In S’West -YCE Scribe

The Secretary-General of the Yoruba Council of Elders, Dr Kunle Olajide, has advised Amotekun corps in all the South-West states to share intelligence amongst themselves if they want their operations to be effective.

The YCE scribe said sharing intelligence among Amotekun outfits in the six states in the region would make their operations very effective and they would be able to address the insecurity problem there.

Olajide, who said this in an interview with THE WHISTLER stated that although the Federal Government did not want Amotekun to be a regional security outfit, he said it would metamorphosed into that with time.

The governors of the six states in the South-West came together in 2019 and decided to establish the Western Nigeria Security Network also known as Operation Amotekun to fight the insecurity in the region.

Olajide said, “I want to see the performance of Amotekun in the few states it has been inaugurated. I do not want the corruption in the federal security agencies to be replicated in Amotekun, I don’t want to see Amotekun corps extorting money from citizens and I wouldn’t want to see them brutalising citizens or exhibiting any of those vices in the federal security agencies.

“I want them to be seen as a patriotic outfit that is genuinely interested in ensuring the protection and welfare of Yoruba citizens and residents in their respective states.

“I want to see enough coordination among the outfits. I want them to work together and collaborate and have the coordinating headquarters. Even though the Federal Government is trying to forestall that, they don’t want to see a regional outfit but they are wasting time.

” Amotekun will metamorphose into a regional outfit because the Yoruba in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun , Ondo and Ekiti where Amotekun will operate are the same.

“They must collaborate to be effective, they must share intelligence, they must have radio communication connection irrespective of what anybody is saying.”

The YCE scribe also said Nigeria did not need to break up but stressed that it must be restructured to address some of the issues that had plagued it.

He said, ” I am not that despondent about Nigeria and I believe restructuring can still address the problem and make it work.

“If the country properly restructured that is the various ethic nationalities sit down and agree on how they want to live together,at the outset it might be a loose federation, just like confederation.

“Under this arrangements, each group will control and deploy its resources according to priorities but gradually it will become a strong federation that will be in the position to lead the world in the next 50 years.”
