How SARS Killed First Bank Chairman’s Brother ‘For No Reason’

Many Nigerians have continued to come out to give personal accounts about the alleged atrocious activities of some members of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.

One such cruel activity was the alleged murder of Modebayo Awosika, a brother of the Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria, Ibukun Awosika, by SARS operatives in 2008.

Modebayo, who until his death was a senior manager at First Bank, was said to have been murdered shortly before his 4oth birthday around Lekki, Lagos State.

Akintunde Oyebode, a friend of the First Bank Chairman and Ekiti State Commissioner for Finance, revealed in a tweet that the police officers allegedly shot Modebayo to death for no just cause.

Oyebode wrote, “My friend’s brother Modebayo Awosika was killed by policemen in Lekki. He was a loving father and husband; a senior manager at First Bank, just about to turn 40. Killed for no reason. Found myself on his memorial site tonight.”

Reacting to the tweet, Ibukun Awosika said “Thank you for remembering Bayo! It was a long night on that day!”

Another twitter, @Suky_Samuel, who seemed conversant with the incident, said: “…the SARS runaway (sic) after they knew Bayo Awosika was not just an ordinary person, but FIRST BANK REFUSED TO SEEK REDRESS BY SUEING POLICE IGP AND NIGERIA POLICE”

A tribute on Modebayo’s memorial website said he graduated “in flying colours” from the University of Ilorin, where he studied microbiology before obtaining his MBA from the University of Lagos.

The tribute further said Bayo, “was generally active in all endeavors and very well loved by all.”
