Imo Prison Break: Police Arrest 3 More Suspects

The Imo State police command has arrested three suspected notorious criminals – Cosmos Mbamara, Okafor George Chisom and Nwankwo Levi – who reportedly escaped from the state’s correctional facility in April.

The state’s police spokesperson, Bala Elkana, revealed this in a statement on Wednesday.

According to Elkana, the arrests were jointly made by the Oru, Orlu and Okigwe police divisions.

Cosmos, a native of Ohakpu in Mgbidi, Oru West Local Government Area, was arrested by the Oru West police division.

Before his escape from prison, he was said to be facing murder charges.

Chisom, 35, is a native of Eziachi in Orlu LGA and was arrested by the surveillance team of the Orlu Division on Tuesday at Umuaba village.

He is also facing murder charges over his alleged involvement in a series of murders in Orlu environs.

“On 18th May, 2021 at about 0700hours, following a sustained monitoring, detectives from Oru West Division successfully rearrested one Cosmas Mbamara ‘m’ of Ohakpu area, Mgbidi, Oru West, who escaped from Correctional Centre, Owerri on 5th April, 2021 during a jail break.

“The suspect was facing trial for murder when he escaped from the correctional Centre.

“On the same date at about 1000hours, Surveillance Team from Orlu Division arrested one Okafor George Chisomo “m” 35 years old, of Eziachi area, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo state.

“The suspect was arrested at Umuaba Village,  Orlu LGA during a well coordinated operation. He is involved in series of murder in Orlu and environ.

“One of the murder charges he is facing at Orlu High Court happened in November, 2019 when he slaughtered one Matrida Eboh ‘f’ .

“He escaped from Correctional Centre, Owerri during the jail break,” said the Imo command.

Elkana said the third suspect, Nwankwo Levi, 35, was arrested by detectives from Okigwe Division on May 13, 2021, in his hideout in Okigwe.

“In a related development, detectives from Okigwe Division rearrested one Nwankwo Levi ‘m’ 35 years old, of Okigwe area.

“The suspect was arrested on 13th May, 2021 in his hideout at Okigwe. He was facing charges of kidnapping and armed robbery before his escaped from the Correctional Centre, Owerri during the said jail break.”

This is the forth arrest of suspected Imo prison escapees in the last one week, after 35-year-old Obinna Eze was arrested on Monday.
