JUST IN: Buhari, UN Chief Condemn Military Coup In Guinea

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu has expressed sadness over the toppling of President Alpha Conde of Guinea by military forces in the country.

Buhari, through the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the coup as a contravention of democratic principles which are binding on West African countries.

“The Nigerian Government is saddened by the apparent coup d’etat that has taken place in the Republic of Guinea today, in clear violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

“The Government of Nigeria strongly condemns and rejects any unconstitutional change of government and therefore calls on those behind this coup to restore constitutional order without delay and protect all lives and property,” Mrs Esther Sunsuwa (Mrs), Spokesperson for the ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

Also, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has condemned the toppling of the Guinean government.

The UN Secretary General urged the military to release President Alpha Conde forthwith.

Guterres tweeted that the global body was monitoring what was currently playing out in the West African country.

“I am personally following the situation in Guinea very closely. I strongly condemn any takeover of the government by force of the gun and call for the immediate release of President Alpha Conde,” says Guterres.

THE WHISTLER earlier reported that Condé of Guinea was on Sunday overthrown by a group of soldiers led by Col. Mamadi Doumbouya.

He was detained after a gunfire around the presidential palace.

Explaining their actions, Doumbouya claimed the military intervened to save the country from a president who wants to remain in power by all means.

“The personalization of political life is over. We will no longer entrust politics to one man, we will entrust it to the people,” he said.
