Just in: Police Disperse Yoruba Nation Protesters In Lagos

Armed Policemen have dispersed protesters agitating self-determination for Yoruba people at Ojota area of Lagos State

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Hakeem Odumosu, was addressing journalists at the venue of the rally when the agitators, who were armed with banners and flyers, started arriving.

They displayed their banners and were chanting freedom songs when the police cannon trucks began to spray hot water on them.

Police also fired tear gas, forcing the protesters to flee.

But they regrouped and started chanting freedom songs.

Some of the protesters claimed that the policemen had bundled some of their collegaues into their vehicles but they said they would not stop agitating for their rights no matter the attack.

The CP had on Thursday said no protest would be allowed in the state today but the Ilana Omo Oodua, which is the umbrella body for Yoruba self-determination groups, insisted that they would hold the rally because they were not violating any law by holding a peaceful rally.

The General Secretary of Ilana Omo Oodua, George Akinola, Said their rallies had always been peaceful and they were not ready to.be violent.
