Linda Ikeji Defends Pregnancy After Being Slammed For Preaching Celibacy

Shortly after announcing that she is pregnant, Nigerians have heavily pounded on popular blogger and entrepreneur, Linda Ikeji.

The reason for the harsh reactions to her ‘milestone announcement’ follows her previous messages on how celibacy can be attained by her young female fans.

Celibacy according to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary is the state of not being married and the abstention from sexual intercourse. Wikipedia describes it as the state of voluntarily being unmarried, sexually abstinent, or both, usually for religious reasons.

Recall that in March, Ikeji’s sisters had announced her engagement to her one-time ex-boyfriend.

It was therefore expected that the celibacy evangelist will heed the first-things-first policy in her relationship by abstaining from sex before marriage.

However, the businesswoman in a lengthy post revealed that she is about six months pregnant and expecting a baby boy.

She, however, did not reveal the father of the child.

The announcement prompted Nigerians on Twitter to inquire from the blogger if she was secretly married.

Others asked her why she decided to get pregnant outside marriage, an act that is not common in Nigeria’s culture.

Some others also asked her why she preached celibacy, yet did not act on her message.

The blogger, in a series of tweet that seems to have been deleted from her handle @lindaikeji, said her action was prompted by the fact that she wasn’t getting any younger.

She also said it was okay to be celibate until the “very special one” has been found.

“I preached celibacy to young girls because I feel that’s the right way to live until you meet someone very special that you love & who loves you and wants to be in a committed relationship with you. Passing body around and having multiple partners is not the way and I stand by it.

“And I’ve lived by it. But then I turned 36 and I knew there was nothing else I wanted more than to be a mum & wife and celibacy wasn’t going to get me that! I even did a video talking about how much I wanted these two things and God has finally answered my prayers. Beyond blessed,” she said.
