Lionel Messi missed a second-half penalty saved as World Cup debutants Iceland held Argentina to a 1-1 draw

The Barcelona star was denied by Hannes Halldorsson after Sergio Aguero was fouled in the box by Hordur Magnusson.

Messi’s goal would have put La Albiceleste ahead but his left-footed stike was parried away by Halldorsson, who had a good game today.

Aguero scored his first ever World Cup goal in the 19th minute to put the South Americans ahead.

However Iceland, the smallest nation to qualify for a World Cup finals, equalised just four minutes later through Alfred Finnbogason.

Argentina face Croatia next while Iceland will play Nigeria in their next game.
