SERAP Commends NBA For Dropping El-Rufai From List Of Conference Speakers

The Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has lauded the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for withdrawing Governor Nasir El-Rufai from its list of speakers at the forthcoming Annual General Conference.

The NBA had earlier announced that the governor was no longer going to speak at the conference.

“The National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association at its ongoing meeting resolves that the invitation to the Kaduna State Governor, H.E. Nasir El-Rufai by the 2020 Annual General Conference Planning committee be withdrawn and decision communicated to the Governor,” NBA tweeted.

THE WHISTLER reported that numerous people had criticised the NBA’s decision to feature the Kaduna governor.

On its part, SERAP stated that the announcement was a good development.

“We welcome decision by @NigBarAssoc to withdraw its invitation to Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai on ground of poor human rights record,” it tweeted.

SERAP also urged the NBA to invite the Federal Government to the conference.

It added that the federal government must obey rule of law.

SERAP’s tweet further reads: “We also call on NBA NOT to invite @NigeriaGov /its reps to its events until President Buhari obeys ALL outstanding court orders.

” We’re calling on the @NigBarAssoc to publicly condemn the failure of @NigeriaGov to respect the rule of law and obey court orders; and to pass a resolution asking President Buhari to immediately comply with the orders.

“There is no justice and freedom without the rule of law.”
