Ndume Labels Maina As ‘Not Trustworthy’, Withdraws As His Surety

For jumping bail and causing his recent remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, Senator Ali Ndume will commence the process to withdraw as surety for the fugitive former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina.

Ndume revealed this on Friday, exactly one week after regaining his freedom from the Kuje Correctional Centre where he was being remanded for failing to produce Maina after standing as his surety.

Maina, who is facing a 12-count charge for allegedly laundering about N2 billion through his company during his time as the PRTT chairman, had jumped bail after Ndume stood as surety for him, leading to the senator’s subsequent remand in prison.

The charges were filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Federal High Court had recently ordered that Maina’s trial should begin in absentia months after he was reported to have fled the country against his bail conditions.

The fugitive pension boss was, however, re-arrested in Niger Republic by security agents in the country on December 1, after which he was extradited to Nigeria.

Ndume spoke to journalists after the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered Maina’s remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre on Friday.

He said, “I commend the Nigeria Police Force for executing the bench warrant issued on Maina by the federal high court in Abuja.

“This has shown that the NPF is not a write-off. They are professionals under the able leadership of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

“With the successful arrest, extradition and subsequent remand of Maina at the Kuje Correctional Centre, I will proceed to direct my legal team to begin the process of withdrawing my suretyship for Maina with immediate effect because his action has shown that he is not trustworthy,” said Ndume
