Nigeria’s Population May Hit 800 Million By 2100 – New Study

While the rest of the world may witness population decline, the case would be different for Sub-saharan African countries, particularly Nigeria, new study shows.

The new report captured that Nigeria’s population could hit 800 million by year 2100, due to the nature of its environment.

This was disclosed in a report published on Wednesday by lead author Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

Murray stressed that among other things, an African country like Nigeria, could become the epicenter of economic boom, adding that that would play a role in its population size in the years ahead.

“These forecasts suggest good news for the environment, with less stress on food production systems and lower carbon emissions, as well as significant economic opportunity for parts of sub-Saharan Africa,” he stated.

APF reports that the study added that Sub-Saharan Africa will triple in size to some 3 billion people, with Nigeria alone expanding to almost 800 million in 2100, second only to India’s 1.1 billion.”

However, the study predicted a global population decline which would be championed by aging population, declining fertility rate in some countries.

The study forecasts that Japan, Spain, Italy, Thailand, Portugal, South Korea and Poland, may witness a decline by 2100.

It added that countries like China could witness population decline from 1.4 billion people to 730 million in 80 years.

DW reports that the study concluded that the best solutions for maintaining population levels and economic growth in high-income countries includes flexible immigration policies and social support for families who want children.

“However, in the face of declining population there is a very real danger that some countries might consider policies that restrict access to reproductive health services, with potentially devastating consequences,” Murray stressed.

Meanwhile, a United Nations 2019 Report predicted a boom in world population by 2100, reaching 10.9 billion.

Today, the world’s population is over 7 billion.
