Onitsha Building Collapse: Fear Over Trapped Victims

A building under construction near the iconic Ochanja market in Onitsha, Anambra State, collapsed on Monday evening.

The incident, which occurred around 8 pm on Monday, sent shockwaves through the community. Eyewitness reports hearing the sounds of collapsing concrete and cries for help. Local residents and passersby immediately formed rescue teams in a desperate attempt to reach those trapped.

It is feared that some persons are still trapped in the rubble.

The collapse, believed to be related to a building under construction intended for market use, has raised critical questions about construction safety standards and oversight. Early reports suggest potential shortcomings in adherence to regulations.

As of Tuesday morning, one individual is confirmed dead and two others are injured. However, the exact number of individuals still trapped remains unclear. Local authorities, including the state police spokesman DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, have yet to release an official statement.
