Osinbajo: I’m ‘Very Angry’ At SARS For Maiming, Killing Nigerians

The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has expressed anger at operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) accused of mindlessly harassing and killing youths in the country.

Osinbajo said he and President Muhammadu Buhari were concerned about rising cases of human rights abuse by operatives of the police unit.

The Vice President spoke in a statement posted on Twitter by his senior media assistant, Laolu Akande.

“I am very angry about what I see happening to young men and women who are arrested, in some cases maimed or killed by men of the police force,” said Osinbajo.

He said President Buhari was also in support of reforms that would put an end to violation of the citizens’ rights by the SARS operatives.

Osinbajo added, “Consequently those few bad eggs in the police who are involved in such violations would be investigated, prosecuted and exposed to show there is consequence for such misconduct.”

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had earlier barred SARS operatives and other tactical squads of the Force from further routine patrols and stop and search duties across the country.

IGP Adamu also barred police officers from “indiscriminate and unauthorized” search of mobile phones, laptops and other devices of members of the public.

The police chief further directed that operatives of SARS and other tactical squads of the Force should concentrate on armed robbery, kidnaping and other violent crimes instead of chasing after cybercrime suspects commonly known as ‘Yahoo boys’.
