Restriction Of SARS Welcome Development – Reps Deputy Chief Whip

The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has welcomed the restriction of activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammad Adamu.

Onyejeocha, in a personally signed statement sent to THE WHISTLER on Sunday, said the IGP’s directive was proof that the public could shape government decisions with one voice.

“The restriction placed on the FSARS and other tactical units of the Nigerian Police is in order as there are many conflicting interventions done on behalf of the Nigerian police. It demonstrates the influence that public opinion carries in shaping the course of policy and governance.

“I am optimistic that the police authorities have fashioned ways to ensure that the ban will not compromise our policing system and the safety of the Nigerian citizens which is the utmost priority,” said the lawmaker.

THE WHISTELR reported earlier that IGP Adamu had barred SARS operatives and other tactical squads of the Force from further routine patrols and stop and search duties across the country.

The IGP also barred policemen from “indiscriminate and unauthorized” search of mobile phones, laptops and other devices of members of the public.

The police chief further directed that operatives of SARS and other tactical squads of the Force should concentrate on armed robbery, kidnaping and other violent crimes instead of chasing after cybercrime suspects commonly known as ‘Yahoo boys’.
