How Parents Encourage Child Sexual Abuse

Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, the Coordinator of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), has revealed that some parents make it easy for children to be defiled by sex offenders.

Vivour-Adeniyi disclosed this in a chat with The Nation while revealing the factors fueling sexual violence.

She said: “According to the data gathered from our research, the first factor is the abused abuser factor’’.

Sexual violence is an attempt to obtain a sexual act by violence or coercion, regardless of the relationship with the victim.

Vivour-Adeniyi explained that parents who are used to leaving their wards in the hands of neighbours have overtime made it easy for sex abusers to abuse them, adding that some men with erectile dysfunction who have abused little children claim they did it so the little children will not laugh at them.

‘’Perpetrators do not just pounce on children, they groom them. They gain their trust, get their confidence and it can start with something so basic but you will be amazed what that can do to a child over a period of time. Some people will say why didn’t the child speak up?’’ she queried.

‘’It is because the child did not know better and that is the danger we have in sexual violence. Society most times often blame the victim, even when it is a child. These are the things perpetrators take advantage of and use to groom children.”

Vivour-Adeniyi further urged Parents to not leave their precious jewels with any kind of person.

The DSVRT team was set up in 2012 to respond to issues of rape, domestic violence and child abuse.
