Police Vow To Hunt Down Killers Of Officers In Kebbi Attack

The Nigeria Police Force has honoured 10 officers of the Special Intervention Squad who were killed during a gun battle with suspected bandits in Kebbi State, vowing to intensify efforts to track down those responsible for the attack.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, made the pledge on Monday during a memorial parade held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja in honour of the fallen officers.

The officers were killed on August 10, 2026, during an encounter with suspected bandits along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

According to Disu, the police team intercepted the suspected bandits who were moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

Ten police officers were killed while two others sustained injuries in the encounter. Two civilians were also reportedly killed.

The IGP said the sacrifice of the officers was not in vain, disclosing that 17 suspected bandits were neutralised during the operation while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed.

He described the deceased personnel as gallant officers who paid the supreme price while carrying out their constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.

“We shall not be intimidated, we shall not relent, and we shall not allow the sacrifices of our fallen heroes to be in vain,” Disu said.

The police boss condoled with the families, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased officers, assuring them that the Force would continue to support them and preserve the memory of their sacrifices.

“We grieve with you, we stand with you, and we will not abandon you,” he told the bereaved families.

Disu also called on Nigerians to remember the sacrifices made by police personnel and other security operatives who continue to risk their lives in the fight against criminality.

He said the relative peace enjoyed by citizens often comes at a heavy personal cost to security personnel deployed to confront armed criminals across the country.

The IGP assured Nigerians that the Police Force would strengthen collaboration with the Armed Forces, other security agencies, state governments and local communities to tackle banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes.

He further directed that efforts be intensified to identify and apprehend those behind attacks on police officers and civilians.

“We will continue to pursue these criminal elements, disrupt their activities and bring those responsible for attacks on our personnel and innocent citizens to justice,” Disu said.

He urged serving police officers to draw renewed courage and determination from the sacrifice of their fallen colleagues, while calling on Nigerians to support collective efforts to build a safer country.

The IGP prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased officers and strength for their families to bear the loss.
