A yet-to-be-identified policeman was Thursday night killed by gunmen at Ezimo in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The dead cop is among the operatives on security surveillance in the community following incidents of kidnapping in the area some months ago.
The hoodlums reportedly made away with the late officer’s rifle after killing him. The Enugu State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but it was gathered that the slain policeman was shot when he was on a solo surveillance.
“He was said to have responded to a distress call after he was informed about some suspicious movements,” according to a resident who refused to be mentioned. He added, “He was shot and his killers also took his rifle.”
Meanwhile, Ezimo Unity Forum, the umbrella body of some progressives in the community, has condemned the act.
The forum’s President, Pharm Charles Ndu, in a post on Friday, entitled “Black Thursday in Ezimo”, wrote, “Report reaching me indicates that criminals stormed Ezimo last night. It is alleged that a policeman performing his lawful duties in defending our community paid the supreme price.
