Row Over Mugabe’s Burial Put To Rest

The row over where former Zimbabwe’s former President, Robert Mugabe, who died on 6 September will be buried is now over after his family disclosed the ex-leader will be buried early next week.

According to the family spokesman, Leo Mugabe, Mugabe will be buried in his village and not a national monument for liberation heroes.

The family of Mugabe and Zimbabwe’s government have been at odds over whether he would be buried in his homestead in Kutama, northwest of Harare or at the National Heroes Acre in the capital.

The family had said Mugabe was a chief and he would be buried in accordance with tradition.

It was reported that in some parts of Zimbabwe, burials of chiefs are a secret affair and people are only told the resting place afterward.

The body of the late leader had arrived Zimbabwe from Singapore yesterday.

“His body will lie in state at Kutama on Sunday night.., followed by a private burial — either Monday or Tuesday — no National Heroes Acre. That’s the decision of the whole family,” Leo Mugabe said.

The late leader, 95, died on September 6 in Singapore where he had been receiving medical treatment since April.

He ruled Zimbabwe for nearly four decades until November 2017 when he resigned.

Mugabe has since been declared a national hero.
