Radio Free Europe reports that the televised end-of-year news conference has been a regular event of Putin’s tenure, one of a series of high-profile set-piece events he uses to burnish his image, reassure Russians that they are in good hands, and send signals to the United States and the rest of the world.

Recall that Russia has been accused by US Democrats for interfering in the 2016 US elections.

Furthermore, the event is coming after series of protest in Moscow and in other cities within the nation.

Thousands of Russians had held a rally in Moscow demanding the release of jailed protesters.
