“I can confirm that he is on his way to India today in a chartered aircraft,” Premium Times quoted a member of the cleric’s medical team as saying.

This comes about a week after a Kaduna High Court granted El-Zakzaky and his wife permission to travel to India for treatment.

The duo had been in detention of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2015 after members of the Zakzaky-led Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) clashed with some Nigerian soldiers in Zaria, Kaduna State.

As part of their bail conditions, the Kaduna High Court ordered that Zakzaky and his wife be accompanied by officials of the Kaduna state government and personnel of the DSS to India.

The Nigerian Government finally allowed the cleric and his wife to seek medical attention abroad after previously ignoring a court order granting them bail.

Their bail also came after a series violent clashes between protesting members of the IMN and security agencies resulted in several deaths.
