Simeone Apologises To Vinicius Over Super Cup Comments

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has apologised to Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior over his comments towards him in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final.

It would be recalled that Real Madrid defeated Athletic Madrid 2-1 in the encounter to qualify for the final before they lost 3-2 to Barcelona.

However, the post-match was overshadowed by Simeone’s comments towards Vinicius during the game.

He made comments to Vinicius from the touchline, with the Argentine reportedly suggesting Real Madrid president Florentino Perez would be offloading him.

Simeone and Vinícius were later both shown yellow cards after exchanging words as the Brazil international was substituted in the 81st minute.

The Atletico Madrid coach apologised to Vinicius and Florentino Perez on Monday in a statement.

The statement read: “I would like to apologise to Mr Florentino and Mr Vinicius for the incident they witnessed.

“It was wrong of me to put myself in that position, and I accept that it was wrong. The team that wins deserves to go through; they deserved to go through.”

“I apologise, but I do not ask for forgiveness. I have nothing more to add.”

Vinicius was on target in Real Madrid’s 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday.

The Brazilian forward’s contract is expected to expire in 2027, and he is yet to agree to a new deal with Real Madrid.
