INEC Postpones Anambra Senatorial Rerun Election Indefinitely

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has postponed the Anambra Central Senatorial District rerun election indefinitely.

The senatorial rerun was earlier scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 5, 2016.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Lawrence Azubuike, who announced the postponement to political parties and security agencies on Tuesday, at the Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Center, Awka, said it was a directive from the National Headquarters of the Commission.

He attributed the postponement to a court order which made provision for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to be accommodated in the election.

Recall that INEC had barred the PDP from participating in the rerun poll following a Court of Appeal judgment of 7th December, 2015 nullifying the election of the party’s candidate, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife in the national assembly election held on March 28, 2015.

But the PDP approached the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, praying INEC to include it in the rerun, a prayer that was granted as the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court had on Monday, ruled that PDP had every right to contest the re-run senatorial election in the state.

The courts order, therefore, necessitated the postponement of the poll indefinitely by INEC.
